Travelling with the Head of Department has been quite interesting. Joseph is quite a well-read person who’s easy-going and fun to be with. Recently I had this conversation with him that really got me thinking. It’s not something most people would ruminate on (I certainly never have), and it might be thought-provoking for you.
Joseph: Jared, do you foresee yourself jumping off a roof sometime down the road?
Me: What? *chuckles* No, of course not!
*thoughtful expression* And why not?
I’ve got a lot of reasons to live. And I mean A LOT! *grins*
Hmm, that would be… great family, great friends, great food, – *Joseph chuckles* – great job, and great.. computer games?
*Joseph nods, thinks for awhile* Of course la, friend. With great friends, great food, do you really think anybody would jump? Of course not, right!
*pause* No, no one would.
What I meant is, suppose – as unlikely or impossible as it seems – that you end up in jail, or stranded in the middle of the desert – would you still say you won’t throw yourself off a roof? Suppose you were accused and convicted of a crime you did not commit – just pure bad luck – and your friends, your family abandon you. You’re in prison, got no “great job, great food and great games”. Yes, it’s almost impossible that it could happen, but if it did, would you still be able to tell me that you wouldn’t throw yourself off the roof?
*longer pause* I.. don’t.. know how to answer that question. Not for now.
*nods* The people who can endure that and still refuse to throw themselves off the roof.. now that is something.
Needless to say, I still don’t know if I would have the willpower to go on with life at that point. Question is, would you?
