You might wanna take a note of this if you’re a mom / mother-in-waiting. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, as if you didn’t already know, mothers-in-laws (MILs) have been revealed to be one of the chief causes of divorces in Malaysia! TheStar Online has the story [article]:

Data in the Malaysia Community and Family Study 2004 by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) revealed that “meddlesome in-laws” is the number one reason why Indian couples get divorced.

It is also among the top three factors for divorce among the Malays and Chinese. The other two factors are incompatibility (42.3%) and infidelity (12%).

“Interference by in-laws is the main reason for Indians to divorce. It is the top-ranked reason at 30%,” said LPPKN director-general Datuk Aminah Abdul Rahman when presenting a paper on Malaysia’s family profile and its effects at Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia yesterday.

Interestingly, the survey option is written as “meddlesome in-laws”. Seriously though, would you enjoy having your mom barking orders at your spouse on how to run his / her life?

To be frank, I never thought that kind of frustration could actually lead to divorce! Goes to show how much of a control freak some moms can be. Or are we just so intolerant that we’d rather leave the marriage than try to cope?

Word to the wise? “It’s never too late to get to know your MIL!”😛
